Ronald Koeman announced his wife’s death on Instagram this week, closing a battle that had come to shape the final years of his coaching career.
“With intense sorrow, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mother and grandmother,” Koeman wrote in the family’s tribute.
Bartina Koeman is survived by the couple’s three children and their grandchildren. Their youngest son, Ronald Koeman Jr., is a goalkeeper at Dutch club Telstar.
A cancer that became chronic in 2023
Bartina Koeman was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. She recovered, but the disease returned in 2018, and in 2023, the year her husband began his second stint as Netherlands manager, doctors told the family the illness had become chronic. Metastases were confirmed the following year.

In October 2025, Koeman briefly left a Netherlands training camp to be at her side, in an early public sign of how serious her condition had become.
Throughout the 2026 World Cup, Bartina remained at home for weekly treatment while her husband was based in the United States with the squad. In the run-up to the tournament, Koeman spoke openly about being an ocean away from her.
“She is not with me, she’s home. She has a treatment every Wednesday and she suffers at least two days from that, due to the side effects,” he told Business Upturn.
He held out one hope: that Bartina might skip a treatment and travel if the Netherlands reached the final in New Jersey.

Resigning the day after Morocco
That trip never came. On Monday, June 29, the Netherlands were beaten in the round of 32 by Morocco, losing 3-2 on penalties. The next day, Koeman announced his resignation.
“The past years have made me realize again that there are more important things than football,” Koeman said.
“Football has been my life, but health is priceless.”
In the same statement, he credited Bartina with getting him through the campaign.
