A symbolic return in Miami
Neymar’s long wait to play for Brazil again ended at Hard Rock Stadium, where the forward came off the bench during Brazil’s 3-0 win over Scotland in their final group-stage match at the 2026 World Cup.
According to MARCA’s report on Neymar’s return, the 34-year-old received one of the loudest ovations of the night when Carlo Ancelotti sent him on late in the second half.
The match was already under control by then. Brazil had taken command through two goals from Vinícius Júnior and a second-half finish from Matheus Cunha, giving Ancelotti the chance to manage Neymar’s comeback in a low-pressure setting.
For Neymar, however, there was nothing routine about the moment. It was his first appearance for the national team since October 17, 2023, when he suffered a serious knee injury during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in Montevideo.

Nearly three years away
Neymar’s absence from Brazil had stretched across 981 days, a period marked by surgery, rehabilitation, setbacks and renewed doubts over whether he would be able to return in time for one more World Cup.
As described by Eduardo Burgos Rodríguez in AS’ report on Neymar’s Brazil comeback, the forward was emotional after the match and reflected on the difficult road back.
“It is a great emotion to return. Everyone knows what I did to get back here. This is my life,” Neymar said. “It is about continuing to improve so I can have more minutes and help. The feeling of coming back is wonderful. I am very happy, very pleased. Emotional, actually.”
He also made clear that the return was about gratitude as much as ambition.

“When I came on, honestly, I didn’t think about anything. I just gave thanks for the moment,” Neymar said. “It was a moment of gratitude. These years since I got injured with the national team, my goal had always been to play this World Cup.”
Ancelotti’s careful plan
Neymar’s place in the squad had been debated in Brazil, particularly after he suffered a calf injury shortly before the tournament. His inclusion was seen by some as a risk, while others argued that his experience and status still made him valuable, even in a limited role.
According to Joan Royo Gual in El País’ report on Neymar’s pre-tournament injury, Brazil’s medical staff had diagnosed a grade-two calf injury in late May, leaving Neymar in a race to be fit for the start of the World Cup.
Ancelotti, though, kept faith with him. Before the Scotland match, the Brazil coach praised Neymar’s attitude in camp.

“Neymar’s attitude in recent days has been very good. He knows his teammates very well, he works very well and with great seriousness,” Ancelotti said, as quoted by AS. “I am trying to recover him as much as possible. I am very happy with him. He brings experience and knowledge of the game.”
That approach was clear in Miami. Neymar was not asked to carry Brazil, only to rejoin the rhythm of the team and build fitness for the knockout stage.
Brazil move on with momentum
Brazil’s win over Scotland confirmed their place at the top of Group C and sent them into the Round of 32 unbeaten. The result also underlined the team’s growing balance, with Vinícius Júnior in sharp scoring form and the defence conceding just once across the group stage.
According to The Times of India’s match report on Brazil’s win over Scotland, Neymar replaced Matheus Cunha in the 76th minute and settled into a familiar creative role, even taking one effort on goal from distance.

For Brazil, his return adds another layer to a squad already moving confidently through the tournament. For Neymar, it was a reminder that his story with the national team is not finished yet.
Whether this World Cup becomes his last dance or one final chase for the trophy that has eluded him, his first minutes back carried meaning well beyond the scoreline. In Miami, Brazil had already won the match. Neymar’s appearance made the night feel bigger than that.
