Portugal’s World Cup campaign has been hit by personal tragedy, with assistant coach Ricardo Carvalho departing the squad’s Florida base following the passing of his father, Manuel Ribeiro de Carvalho, at the age of 69. The news emerged just days before the team’s crucial round-of-32 fixture against Croatia.
In a show of solidarity, the entire Portugal squad held a tribute at their North American training camp to support their esteemed coach. The Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) also released an official message, expressing their condolences. “We’re with you. Strength, Ricardo Carvalho. The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences for the passing of Manuel Ribeiro de Carvalho, father of Ricardo Carvalho, assistant coach of the National Team, at the age of 69,” the PFF stated, as reported by Goal.com.
Carvalho’s distinguished career and impact
Ricardo Carvalho, 48, has been an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s backroom staff since 2023, bringing a wealth of experience from his illustrious playing career. A legendary former defender for Portugal, Carvalho earned 89 caps for his country and was a key member of the Euro 2016-winning squad. His club career included a previous coaching stint at Marseille, further solidifying his credentials within the sport. His absence will undoubtedly be felt by the squad, including captain Cristiano Ronaldo, a former international teammate.
Portugal faces Croatia challenge in Toronto
The emotional blow comes as Portugal prepares for a challenging knockout stage match. The team finished second in their World Cup group with five points and is set to face Croatia in Toronto. Martinez’s side enters the tie on an impressive eight-match unbeaten run across all competitions, a streak that includes a recent 0-0 draw against Colombia. However, Croatia presents a formidable opponent, having scored in every World Cup fixture this summer, highlighting their offensive threat. Portugal will now have to navigate this critical encounter without one of its core backroom pillars.
