When Tyler Dibling arrived at Everton from Southampton in a staggering £40 million deal, he was heralded as a cornerstone of the club’s future, a generational talent whose dribbling style drew comparisons to Jack Grealish.

Yet, 20-year-old Dibling’s first campaign at Hill Dickinson Stadium has been less of a grand entrance and more of a quiet transition, leaving many to wonder when the hefty investment will begin to pay dividends.

The £40 million transfer fee instantly positioned Dibling as one of the most expensive signings in Everton’s history, a figure that amplifies expectations for immediate impact.

This was a player for whom Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig had reportedly vied, and who, at Southampton, was once speculated to command a £100 million price tag. However, under manager David Moyes, Dibling has found first-team opportunities scarce.

Limited minutes, mounting pressure

Despite the significant outlay, Dibling has started just four Premier League games and six games in total for Everton, accumulating a mere 513 minutes of action. His introverted nature and the move from the south coast to Merseyside were anticipated to require an adjustment period, but the lack of progress has become a talking point, especially as he was overlooked even after Jack Grealish suffered a season-ending foot injury.

Furthermore, Dwight McNeil has consistently been chosen ahead of Dibling, even as Everton reportedly considered selling McNeil to Crystal Palace.

Everton manager David Moyes has been clear about his expectations for the young midfielder. “He’ll have to do better, I think. He’ll have to do better in his work and in his training,” Moyes stated, as reported by BBC Sport.

The club has even brought in Tyrique George on loan from Chelsea, a player Dibling knows from England Under-21 duty, specifically as competition. “We want Tyler to step up, we really do. He’s important to us. He’s a player who we put a lot of faith and money into to bring him here so we are looking for a lot more,” Moyes added.

England U21 recognition offers a glimpse of potential

The stark contrast between Dibling’s club situation and his international standing is notable. He remains highly regarded by England Under-21 coach Lee Carsley, with Football Association sources confirming his importance to the squad aiming to retain the European Championship title won in 2023. In the 2025-26 season, Dibling has featured prominently for the U21s:

  • 3 starts
  • Involved in 6 games
  • Played a total of 261 minutes

Former Southampton manager Russell Martin once lauded Dibling as “the most talented player I’ve ever worked with,” a sentiment that underscores the raw ability Everton invested so heavily in.

A crucial summer ahead

Everton’s American owners, The Friedkin Group, have a clear strategy of signing young players like Dibling, Merlin Rohl, and Adam Anzou for development and potential future sell-on value.

This long-term vision suggests patience, but the £40 million price tag demands more immediate returns. Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman told BBC Sport, “When a club like Everton pay £40m for someone, they expect that £40m signing to be in the first team straight away, but that same modern market means you have to pay a lot of money as premium for these young kids with Dibling’s talent.”

Osman remains optimistic, stating, “I would be absolutely amazed if Dibling wasn’t at Everton next season and be expected to progress and be part of the team. He’s got incredible potential. It’s been a season of development, but that £40m price tag amplifies expectations and everything that goes with it.”

With Dibling not expected to start Monday night’s home game against Manchester City, all eyes now turn to this summer’s pre-season. It is widely regarded as a crucial period for Dibling to demonstrate he is ready to translate his undeniable potential into consistent first-team performances and finally justify Everton’s substantial investment.
