Azeez Al-Shaair walked out for Houston’s Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals with “Wafaa Akila” written across his eye black. She was eight years old.
Wafaa and her father Yousef were killed on 6 September 2026, when an Israeli airstrike hit their car as they drove to buy school supplies after her first day back at school, according to Essentially Sports.
The week before, Al-Shaair had faced the Buffalo Bills in Houston’s season opener with the name “Hind Rajab” on his eye black, the five-year-old killed in Gaza in January 2024 when Israeli forces opened fire on her family’s vehicle. The league fined him $11,941 for the message. It was his second such penalty in nine months.
“Is a life worth $11,000?”
Al-Shaair does not sound like a man planning to stop.
“It’s bigger to me than, you know, what’s a life worth? Is a life worth $11,000? Yeah, and it’s priceless,” he told reporters, in comments carried by Heavy.
“I think it’s just important to do that as human beings. Because in a day, we all have our own issues and things that we’re going through. But you can’t get so lost in your own problems that you can’t have compassion for other people in the world.”
“We don’t have to have all the answers to everything to know that an innocent man, an innocent woman, an innocent child losing her life is not right.”
The rule he keeps breaking is NFL Rule 6, Section 4, Article 8, which prohibits players from wearing or displaying personal messages on game-day equipment unless they have been cleared in advance by the league office.

From “stop the genocide” to Hind Rajab
Al-Shaair is not a fringe voice. The 29-year-old is a three-time team captain in Houston, signed a $54 million contract extension in the 2026 offseason and earned his first Pro Bowl selection for the 2025 season.
His pattern of eye-black messages goes back to January 2026, when he was fined $11,593 for writing “stop the genocide” during Houston’s wild-card playoff win at Pittsburgh. He wore the same message in pregame warm-ups a week later before the divisional-round game against the Patriots, and was warned he would be pulled from the field if he kept it on for kick-off.
Kyrie Irving, the Dallas Mavericks guard, publicly offered to pick up the tab after the Hind Rajab fine.
“I’ll take care of his fine,” Irving wrote on social media.

The league prohibits fines from being paid by anyone other than the player they are levied against, so the money will still come out of Al-Shaair’s cheque. Al-Shaair said he and Irving are on the same page anyway.
“I think the biggest thing is me and him align on the cause, which is humanity.”
Houston lost the opener to Buffalo 36-31. Al-Shaair could face a third fine for the “Wafaa Akila” message he wore against Cincinnati.
