An audacious claim by Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme, alleging Erling Haaland has already agreed to a move to the Bernabéu, has been swiftly and emphatically denied by the player’s representatives and Manchester City, who are now considering legal action.

Riquelme, a 37-year-old entrepreneur challenging long-serving incumbent Florentino Perez, made the bombshell announcement during an appearance on the Spanish television show *El Hormiguero* (Antena 3, Spain). His campaign hinges on securing blockbuster transfers, promising not only Haaland but also the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to bolster Real Madrid’s squad.

Riquelme’s bold transfer pledges

During his televised appearance, Riquelme expressed supreme confidence in his ability to deliver these high-profile signings. He even offered a unique guarantee to club members.

“If I break my promises regarding either of these players, I’ve signed a guarantee where I’d pay 100 per cent of membership costs for next season. Haaland has a release clause, and he wants to come to Madrid,” Riquelme stated, as reported by Goal.com UK. He further elaborated on Rodri, saying, “He’s a great player, in a position where Madrid need to strengthen. We’ve spoken to his agent, we have to respect his club, but if I’m president he’ll play for Madrid. I’ll do everything possible.”

However, the response from Haaland’s camp was immediate and dismissive. A joint statement from Haaland’s father, Alfie Haaland, and his agent, Rafaela Pimenta, directly refuted Riquelme’s assertion. “All very entertaining but not true. We wish all the best for both candidates in the Madrid elections,” they said.

Manchester City also weighed in, making it clear there was no truth to the rumors. The Athletic reported that City stated there was no chance of Haaland moving and no contractual clause to enable it, adding that the club is considering legal action over Riquelme’s claims and the use of their player’s image in this context. Haaland is currently under contract with Manchester City through 2034.

Election heats up with rival promises

The controversy unfolds amid a heated Real Madrid presidential election, marking the first time since 2006 that members have a genuine choice, as Perez has run unopposed in the last five cycles. Riquelme’s strategy aims to capitalize on the club’s recent two trophyless seasons, proposing a new direction that includes appointing legends like Raul as sporting director.

Florentino Perez has countered Riquelme’s transfer pledges with his own campaign promises, including confirming Jose Mourinho’s agreed return as head coach. This claim, however, also faced scrutiny, with Mourinho reportedly telling Benfica that footage of him in a Real Madrid shirt, released by Perez’s campaign, was AI-generated. Perez has also proposed a plan to allow members to pass down their financial stake in the club to their heirs, stating, “With me, Madrid will always belong to its members. I want the members to be the owners of [the club’s] financial wealth. At the moment we’re just owners of an emotional wealth.”
