Playing time frustration puts Tottenham future in doubt

Lucas Bergvall has informed Tottenham Hotspur that he wants to leave the club this summer as he looks for a clearer route to regular first-team football.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who joined Spurs from Djurgarden in 2024, remains highly regarded in north London. But his position has become increasingly uncertain after a difficult campaign in which his role was reduced, particularly following Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival as head coach.

Bergvall made 45 appearances during his first season at Tottenham and signed a new long-term contract in April 2025. That deal runs until June 2031, giving Spurs a strong position in any negotiations.

Chelsea and Villa among interested clubs

According to Metro, Chelsea and Aston Villa are among the clubs watching developments, while Nottingham Forest have also been linked with a move for the Sweden international.

The situation was described by David Ornstein in The Athletic as one that has attracted interest from clubs in England and elsewhere in Europe.

Chelsea and Aston Villa both showed interest earlier in the year, but Tottenham were not prepared to consider a sale at that stage. Bergvall’s firm stance may now force the club to reassess its position, although his long contract means Spurs are under no pressure to accept a cut-price deal.

Spurs look to strengthen midfield

Bergvall’s uncertainty comes at a time when Tottenham are actively looking to strengthen in midfield.

Spurs have been linked with Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes as De Zerbi prepares for his first full season in charge. Further additions would only increase the competition for minutes in Bergvall’s preferred central midfield role.

The Sweden international is understood to want a club where he can play more regularly and continue his development after a stop-start season in north London.

World Cup focus remains with Sweden

For now, Bergvall remains with Sweden at the World Cup.

He made history in Sweden’s opening match against Tunisia, becoming the youngest player to represent the country at a World Cup. He also came off the bench in the 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands.

Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, face Japan in their final Group F match on Thursday, June 25. Bergvall’s club future is expected to become clearer once his World Cup commitments are over.
