England’s FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash against Norway on Saturday is under a significant cloud of uncertainty, with extreme weather conditions in Miami threatening to disrupt the highly anticipated fixture. According to Sportbible, FIFA faces a potential decision on the match’s scheduling as South Florida grapples with a heat advisory and the looming threat of thunderstorms.
The US National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the region, forecasting “feels like” temperatures that could soar as high as 43C when factoring in heat and humidity. Adding to the concerns, weather forecasters predict the return of thunderstorms before the weekend. These conditions could directly impact the game, scheduled for a 10pm BST (5pm local time) kick-off at Hard Rock Stadium.
FIFA’s protocols and previous delays
FIFA’s safety protocols mandate the suspension of matches whenever lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of a stadium. As highlighted by Sportbible, this is not an unprecedented issue for England in the current tournament; their Round of 16 fixture against Mexico was delayed by one hour due to heavy rain and the possibility of thunderstorms. England ultimately secured passage into the last eight with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mexico, featuring a brace from Jude Bellingham and a penalty from Harry Kane, despite Jarell Quansah’s 54th-minute red card.
Tuchel’s squad faces injury and illness woes
Beyond the weather, England coach Thomas Tuchel is contending with a growing list of squad concerns ahead of the crucial match against a Norway side featuring star striker Erling Haaland.

Key midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a fractured arm after the Mexico victory and has since undergone surgery, ruling him out of contention for the quarter-final. Defender Dan Burn reflected on the incident: “I think I killed him a bit because I made it look really easy when I jumped over. I just heard the noise behind us straight away, and you know with Hendo, if he doesn’t get up, there’s something wrong. He’s had his op now, and hopefully they’re still up for him to play in the tournament.”
Sportbible also reported that Marc Guehi is battling a hamstring issue and will be assessed on Friday, while Declan Rice has missed two days of training due to a sickness bug.
On a more positive note, Reece James has returned to full training and is expected to be available for selection. England aims to reach the semi-finals for only the second time in three attempts, but must first navigate both a formidable Norwegian opponent and the unpredictable Miami weather.
