Emiliano Martinez has intensified speculation surrounding Johan Manzambi’s future after appearing to question the Switzerland midfielder about a possible move to Aston Villa.
The exchange took place following Argentina’s 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland in the World Cup quarter-finals in Kansas City. As Martinez greeted Manzambi after the final whistle, the Argentina goalkeeper appeared to ask: “Going to Villa?”
According to a report carrying footage of the conversation, the short question was quickly interpreted by supporters as a sign that Martinez knew more about Villa’s transfer plans than had been publicly announced.
It was not, however, an official confirmation. Neither Aston Villa nor Freiburg had announced an agreement at the time of writing.

Manzambi watched the quarter-final from the sidelines
Manzambi did not actually feature against Argentina. The 20-year-old was ruled out with a knee problem, having also missed Switzerland’s round-of-16 victory over Colombia.
FIFA’s preview of Switzerland’s quarter-final preparations confirmed that the midfielder was unavailable, correcting the suggestion that Martinez approached him after they had faced each other on the pitch.
Argentina eventually advanced after extra time, with goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martinez breaking Switzerland’s resistance. The result sent the defending champions into a semi-final against England.
Despite missing the final two matches of Switzerland’s campaign, Manzambi emerged as one of the tournament’s breakout players. He recorded three goals and two assists during his first four appearances, establishing himself as an important figure in Murat Yakin’s side.

Villa move ahead of Newcastle
Newcastle initially appeared to be in control of the transfer.
The club reached a verbal agreement with Freiburg worth approximately £51.5 million, with the deal expected to be completed once Switzerland’s World Cup campaign had ended. Manzambi had also discussed personal terms with Newcastle, although he had not made a final commitment.
As described in The Guardian’s original report on Newcastle’s agreement, the proposed fee would have represented a record sale for Freiburg.
Aston Villa subsequently renewed their interest and are now understood to be Manzambi’s preferred destination.

According to Sky Sports’ transfer update, Villa offered to match the £49 million package Newcastle had verbally agreed with Freiburg. The opportunity to play Champions League football is reported to have influenced Manzambi’s preference.
Villa are therefore closing in on the midfielder, but the final fee remains uncertain. Some reports have valued the complete package at around £60 million, including potential bonuses. A transfer at that level would surpass the amount Villa paid Everton for Amadou Onana and become the club’s record signing.
Onana injury increases Villa’s need
Villa’s pursuit became more urgent after Onana suffered a serious knee injury while on international duty.
The Belgian midfielder ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to spend several months on the sidelines. Manzambi’s ability to play in several midfield positions would give Unai Emery another option during Onana’s recovery.

He is not a direct replacement in every tactical sense. Onana is primarily a defensive midfielder, while Manzambi is more comfortable progressing the ball, moving between the lines and creating opportunities in advanced areas.
That versatility is one of the qualities that has made him attractive to Premier League clubs.
Villa have already seen his quality
Manzambi previously faced Aston Villa in the Europa League final in May, when Freiburg were beaten 3-0 by Emery’s side.
Although Freiburg struggled to create clear chances, Manzambi came close with a header that was saved by Martinez before the offside flag was raised. Villa’s recruitment staff therefore had an opportunity to assess him directly before his World Cup breakthrough.

His 2025-26 season reportedly ended with seven goals and nine assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. His World Cup performances then strengthened his reputation, particularly after he scored twice as a substitute against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Yakin praised the midfielder’s continued development in a FIFA profile published during the tournament.
“He is a very precious and important player for us. He is constantly increasing his performance and is a team player,” the Switzerland coach said.
Manuel Akanji also highlighted Manzambi’s creativity and his ability to produce unexpected moments in difficult situations.
Martinez adds fuel to the speculation
Martinez’s question has inevitably strengthened the belief that a deal is close.
The goalkeeper has been at Villa since 2020 and remains closely associated with the club, despite continued speculation about his own future. His conversation with Manzambi may have been no more than a light-hearted reference to the transfer reports already circulating.
It should therefore not be treated as proof that contracts have been signed.
The available reports nevertheless point in the same direction. Newcastle had an agreement with Freiburg, Villa entered the race with Champions League football to offer, and Manzambi is now believed to favour a move to Birmingham.
Martinez’s three-word question did not complete the transfer, but it provided Aston Villa supporters with another reason to believe one of the World Cup’s leading young talents could soon be heading to Villa Park.
