The question came from Argentine journalist Bruno Vain as Messi walked into the stadium alongside Rodrigo De Paul on Thursday, ahead of Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup opener against Atletico San Luis. “¿Se va Thiaguito?”, Is little Thiago leaving? Messi’s one-word answer, delivered without breaking stride, was “no”.
That was it. No smile for the cameras, no elaboration, no attempt to soften the denial.
The November timing that fed the story
The story had spread quickly in the previous 24 hours, fuelled by reports in Spanish-language media suggesting Thiago would leave Inter Miami’s academy in November to join Barcelona’s Sub-14 setup.
The timing was too neat to ignore: Thiago turns 14 that month, the age at which Spanish football requires young players to be federated with a club.

Thirteen was also roughly the age at which his father left Rosario for Catalonia.
The narrative wrote itself, and social media obliged. Reports gained traction partly because none of the outlets pointed to a single named source inside Barcelona or the family, and partly because the alleged detail, an autumn move, was specific enough to feel real.
Not the first Messi in La Masia
Thiago is no stranger to the Barcelona youth system. Between 2016 and 2019, while his father was still playing at the Camp Nou, he trained with the Barça Escola, the club’s introductory youth programme.
He joined Inter Miami’s academy in 2023 after the family moved to Florida and has played in the MLS NEXT youth structure since.

Coaches who have worked with him describe a very different footballer to his father. Lionel himself has said as much, telling the Argentine show Simplemente Futbol that Thiago is more of a thinker than a dribbler.
“He’s more thoughtful, more of an organiser, more of a midfielder,” Messi said of his eldest son.
Messi answers with a hat-trick contribution
While the transfer story was being taken apart, Messi answered it in the most emphatic way available to him.
He scored twice and set up another as Inter Miami beat Atletico San Luis 4-2 in their Leagues Cup opener, a performance that left little doubt about where father and, for now, son intend to stay.
Barcelona have not commented on the reports. Inter Miami have not commented either. The only voice on the record is the father’s, and it consists of a single word.
