Manchester United’s eight league-phase opponents are being drawn at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco from 6pm local time, ending a two-season absence from the Champions League. Michael Carrick’s third-place Premier League finish last season carried them back into the competition.
United enter Pot 2, meaning two of their eight opponents will come out of Pot 1. With Premier League clubs ruled out of drawing each other, that leaves back-to-back winners Paris Saint-Germain, plus Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid as the possible Pot 1 fixtures for Carrick’s side.
The Manchester Evening News has flagged one of those six as the worst-case outcome for United: Barcelona. The reason is Marcus Rashford.
The Rashford twist
Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan on 23 July 2025, a deal that included an option to buy the England forward. The purchase clause was fixed at €30m, payable in three instalments through 2028, and Barcelona’s sporting department decided against triggering it before the 15 June deadline.

The forward is back at Old Trafford. Carrick told Sky Sports the squad had been reunited for pre-season, Rashford included.
“We have got a full squad this week in Dublin. We fly straight there and have a few days where we have the whole group back together. Marcus is part of that.”
Carrick was United’s captain when a teenage Rashford broke into the first team a decade ago, and the head coach has spoken about him as a straightforward reintegration rather than a problem to be managed. Rashford has not started a Premier League match for United since December 2024.
What a Camp Nou return would look like
If the balls fall a certain way, Rashford would be walking back into Barcelona in the group phase of the competition Barcelona used him in last season. His Champions League run at the Catalan club ended in the quarter-finals. Barcelona won La Liga.

There is a caveat around whether Rashford is at United for the full league phase. The Yahoo Sports report on his return noted that United’s stance in the market is that they will only consider a permanent sale, not another loan, if a serious offer arrives. For now he is training with the group and named in the squad.
The seeding maths behind a difficult draw
United’s absence from Europe’s top competition has cost them in the UEFA coefficient, which is weighted over five years and dropped them into Pot 2 rather than Pot 1. That guarantees two heavyweight opponents from Pot 1, plus two more each from Pots 2, 3 and 4.
The 36 clubs each play eight matches, four home and four away, against eight different opponents. The league phase begins on 8 September 2026 and runs to 27 January 2027, with UEFA due to publish the full fixture list with match dates and kick-off times by Saturday 29 August.
