The kick came on the Jungfraujoch, the glacier saddle marketed as the “Top of Europe,” on snow-covered ground with wind whipping across the plateau. A Guinness World Records adjudicator was on hand to certify the mark at 11,332 feet.
Vinatieri wore a Patriots jersey for the attempt, the same uniform he wore for his most-replayed kick: the 45-yarder through heavy snow in the January 2002 divisional playoff against the Oakland Raiders that forced overtime and set New England on the road to its first Super Bowl title.
“Different from anything I’ve ever done”
The 53-year-old spoke about the effect of the altitude after the record was verified.
“Snow is simply part of my time with the Patriots. But kicking a field goal at 3,454 metres is something completely different from anything I’ve ever done. You feel the altitude with every breath you take, your heart rate is different, your rhythm is different, and no one can really tell you beforehand how it will affect the kick, because no one has done this before,” Vinatieri told reporters at the Jungfraujoch.

A career built on retiring last
Vinatieri’s NFL career ran across 24 seasons, 10 with the Patriots and 14 with the Indianapolis Colts, and ended with his final official kick on 1 December 2019. He walked away as the all-time NFL points leader with more than 2,600, and the all-time leader in field goals made at 599. Four Super Bowl rings and three Pro Bowl selections sit alongside those numbers.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame added him to its Modern Era Class of 2026, and he was inducted in Canton, Ohio, on 8 August this year.
His resume of clutch kicks reads like an NFL highlight reel of the 2000s: the 48-yarder that beat the St. Louis Rams as time expired in Super Bowl XXXVI, the 41-yarder that beat the Carolina Panthers with four seconds left in Super Bowl XXXVIII, and the snowbound playoff kick against the Raiders that has been rerun every winter since.
The Munich connection
The record attempt was not a private hobby. It was staged by the New England Patriots as the opening event of their countdown to a regular-season fixture in Germany.

The Patriots meet the Detroit Lions at the Allianz Arena in Munich on 15 November 2026, part of the NFL’s expanding international schedule. Vinatieri was flown in as the face of that build-up, and the franchise leaned on his snow-kick mythology to give the promotion a hook.
Ahead of the attempt, the Patriots quoted him on what it meant to line up the kick in that shirt.
“I’ve had the chance to attempt a lot of special kicks in my career, but getting to go for an official Guinness World Records title on snow at 3,454 metres in a Patriots jersey is truly something special,” Vinatieri said.
