Ferrari take gamble with final 2026 upgrade ahead of United States Grand Prix

Ferrari’s SF-26 has carried a front-biased balance and a narrow operating window for most of the season. The team’s biggest and final aerodynamic push of 2026, brought to the United States Grand Prix in Austin, is a reworked floor built to address both at once.

The upgrade is centered on an all-new floor that runs from leading edge to diffuser, with modifications spanning the entire structure to optimise airflow and generate more consistent aerodynamic load.

Engineers are chasing three things: more raw downforce, a cleaner front-to-rear balance, and a wider working range so the car keeps its performance when ride height and track conditions shift. The declared aim is to find enough extra load, particularly through medium- and high-speed corners, to close the gap to McLaren and Mercedes.

The sidepods and bodywork get smaller tweaks rather than a rebuild. Inlets have been narrowed to redirect airflow around the mid-section, and the cooling louvres have been reshaped to extract hot air without disturbing the surfaces behind them.

No wholesale sidepod rebuild

Red Bull’s sidepod concept has drawn admirers all year, and Ferrari studied it closely. The team opted against chasing a wholesale copy this late in the season, keeping the sidepod architecture broadly as it was and routing the development spend into the floor instead.

Last step before the 2027 reset

After the Austin weekend, Ferrari will freeze major aerodynamic work on the SF-26 and move its wind-tunnel and CFD resources onto the 2027 car. There is no fifth package coming.

The timing of this one is pointed. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings and could clinch the world title in Austin, with Lewis Hamilton 111 points adrift and Charles Leclerc 125 back heading into the weekend. Ferrari’s 2026 drivers’ fight is settled; what is left is the constructors’ order and the baseline the team can take into the winter.

Team principal Fred Vasseur has pushed back on the idea that the pecking order is fixed heading into Austin.

“If someone is bringing upgrades next week, the classification can change,” he said in the build-up to the weekend.

Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday 24 October, with the race at 3pm local time on Sunday 25 October at the Circuit of The Americas.
