José Mourinho spent Sunday afternoon unable to sleep. By Sunday night he was dedicating a Clasico win to the people who kept him awake.

“I dedicate this win to the Barça fans who did not let me take my nap in the hotel today,” the Portuguese told reporters, according to Get Football News Spain, after Real Madrid’s 2-1 win at Camp Nou.

Mourinho said Barcelona supporters had gathered at the team hotel and sung throughout the day, keeping him from sleeping, before adding, with a shrug, that he had still ended up beating their team.

The visiting fans had arrived outside Real Madrid’s team hotel in the hours before the 9pm local kick-off, and sang their way through the walls.

Mbappé settles it in the 87th

Mbappé put Real Madrid ahead in the 41st minute and finished the night with the winner three minutes from time, after Raphinha had leveled for Barcelona just after the hour mark.

Real Madrid controlled only 37% of possession and were pinned back for long spells, but Mbappé’s two finishes were enough.

The result handed Barcelona their first league defeat of the season and narrowed the gap at the top of La Liga to three points.

A knee slide, 13 years later

Mourinho sprinted down the Camp Nou touchline and dropped onto his knees after Mbappé’s winner. It was his first Clasico as Real Madrid manager in 13 years, following his return to the club in June on a three-year deal.
