For the first time in more than a year, Patrick Mahomes left the field without a touchdown pass to his name. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback finished 15-of-34 for 250 yards with an interception, and the Buffalo Bills held on through a late Kareem Hunt score to win 28-21 at Highmark Stadium.

Josh Allen did almost everything his counterpart could not. The Bills quarterback was 23-of-26 for 273 yards with a passing touchdown to tight end Dalton Kincaid and two more scores on short rushes. Kincaid finished with six catches for 101 yards.

Buffalo built the lead and held it

The Bills were up 21-10 at the break and never fell behind. Buffalo’s defense sacked Mahomes three times, cornerback Maxwell Hairston picked him off in a critical sequence, and a Chiefs decision to go for it on fourth down near midfield ended with the ball back in Allen’s hands.

Kansas City scored on the ground. Rashee Rice ran in from three yards and later caught four passes for 80 yards, including a 29-yard conversion on fourth-and-17 that kept a comeback alive. Hunt punched in a two-yard rushing touchdown with a successful two-point try to make it a one-score game in the fourth quarter, but Buffalo ran out the clock.

Right tackle Jawaan Taylor left early with an ankle injury, further stretching a protection unit that struggled with Buffalo’s pressure for most of the afternoon.

Mahomes points to consistency

Mahomes did not look for excuses, telling the Chiefs’ own channel after the game.

“We have to be more consistent as a team, and I have to be more consistent as a quarterback.”

Head coach Andy Reid, speaking to the same channel, was equally direct about what Kansas City had left on the field.

“We have to do better than that, obviously, when you’re playing a good football team. We had opportunities.”

Five straight in the regular season

The result drops Kansas City to 5-4 and lifts Buffalo to 6-2, with the Bills now winning a fifth straight regular-season meeting with the Chiefs. The postseason record still cuts the other way: Buffalo has not beaten Kansas City in January since 1994.

Buffalo’s next game is on Monday Night Football at the Minnesota Vikings.
