Arsenal have reportedly initiated a “formative enquiry” to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez this summer, setting the stage for a potential transfer battle with European heavyweights Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

The news emerges as the 26-year-old Argentine prepares to face his Premier League suitors in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday night. Arsenal’s interest in Alvarez is not new, with initial inquiries reportedly dating back to January as the club looks to bolster its attacking options ahead of the next season.

A highly sought-after talent

Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid in 2024 after a spell at Manchester City, is widely regarded as “one of the best strikers in the world.” His exceptional talent has not gone unnoticed by football’s elite.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone openly acknowledged the widespread interest in his star forward. “It’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona. It’s normal because he’s very good,” Simeone stated in his press conference ahead of the Champions League clash.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi previously described Alvarez’s performance in the 2022 World Cup semi-final as an “extraordinary game,” further cementing his reputation.

The transfer battle ahead

While Arsenal are keen, they face significant competition. Barcelona are believed to be a particularly tempting destination for Alvarez, who is reportedly “tempted by Barcelona.” Paris Saint-Germain also hold a strong interest in securing his services.

Atletico Madrid, for their part, are determined to retain their key player and will “fight to keep him” at the club. Ben Jacobs, GIVEMESPORT’s senior football correspondent, highlighted the complexity of the situation.

“Arsenal really like Julian Alvarez. It’s a difficult deal, but Andrea Berta has been formatively exploring it, and a bit like when Arsenal liked Rodrygo, he’s kind of a dream target, but we’ll wait and see whether anything develops,” Jacobs explained. He added that while Arsenal and Barcelona are in the mix, Atletico’s ability to persuade Alvarez to stay remains a strong possibility, with all three options currently on the table.

Arsenal’s pursuit of a top-tier striker aligns with their broader strategy to reinforce their squad, especially as they navigate a tight Premier League title race. The Gunners currently lead the table by three points from Manchester City, who have a game in hand, making attacking depth a crucial consideration for the upcoming transfer window.
