White reverses his heavyweight announcement

Dana White has admitted providing incorrect information about the UFC heavyweight championship before confirming Ciryl Gane as the division’s undisputed titleholder.

The confusion began after Tom Aspinall relinquished the belt because of continuing complications from the eye injury he sustained during his no-contest fight against Gane at UFC 321. Gane already held the interim title after stopping Alex Pereira at the UFC’s White House event in June.

White initially said Gane would not automatically become undisputed champion and would need to fight for the vacant belt. However, Joe Rogan subsequently announced during the UFC 331 broadcast that the Frenchman had been elevated to full champion.

At the official UFC 331 post-fight press conference, White was asked whether Rogan’s announcement was correct. “True,” he replied. When a reporter asked what had changed, White said nothing had changed and bluntly accepted that his original answer had been wrong.

Gane will therefore enter UFC 334 as defending champion rather than as an interim titleholder competing for a vacant belt.

Josh Hokit receives unexpected opportunity

Gane’s first defence will come against the unbeaten Josh Hokit at Madison Square Garden in New York on November 14. Hokit owns a 10-0 professional record and has won all four of his UFC appearances, including victories over Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis.

Hokit’s rapid rise has been accompanied by repeated controversy outside the cage. His post-fight interviews have included personal attacks and a false assertion about former US first lady Michelle Obama. White publicly condemned that remark and has repeatedly distanced himself from the fighter’s statements.

The unusual relationship between promoter and challenger was highlighted by SPORTbible, although White stopped short of saying that he hates Hokit personally. His criticism was specifically directed at what the heavyweight says publicly.

“I don’t have to like you for you to thrive here and do well and be successful,” White said, as quoted by MMA Fighting.

Sporting results outweigh personal approval

White’s position is that the UFC should not prevent a fighter from progressing because its management dislikes that person’s opinions or public behaviour. As long as Hokit continues winning, the promoter accepts that he can earn major opportunities.

That stance could create an uncomfortable outcome for the UFC. Victory over Gane would make Hokit heavyweight champion and provide him with an even larger platform, despite White’s frustration with his interviews.

For Gane, the contest offers a chance to remove any lingering uncertainty surrounding his promotion from interim to undisputed champion. For Hokit, it represents the opportunity to complete an exceptionally fast rise from prospect to the face of the UFC’s heavyweight division.
