In a dramatic turn of events just hours before their World Cup last 16 clash, USA forward Folarin Balogun has had his one-match ban suspended by FIFA, making him available to face Belgium. The controversial decision has immediately drawn a strong reaction from the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA), who have launched an appeal.

Balogun had initially been handed a suspension following a red card received in a previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, FIFA opted to suspend the ban, instead placing the player on a one-year probationary period. This ruling came perilously close to the crucial knockout fixture, scheduled for a 6pm local (1am UK) kick-off.

Belgium launches appeal amid controversy

The RBFA wasted no time in expressing their opposition to FIFA’s decision. They announced they were “investigating all potential opposition” to the ruling, with The Athletic reporting that Belgium has been granted a formal right of appeal. Submissions from both US Soccer and the RBFA are required by Monday morning, though The Athletic also noted that Belgium “have not been provided with any guarantees by FIFA” that a resolution will be reached before the match begins.

FIFA justified its decision by referencing Article 27 of its disciplinary code. This article states that FIFA “may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure,” and allows for the imposition of a “probationary period of one to four years” on the player in question.

Reports of presidential intervention

Adding another layer of intrigue to the saga are reports of high-level political intervention. The New York Times reported that US President Donald Trump had personally asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the red card issued to Balogun. This alleged request appears to have prompted US Soccer to act, despite the federation not having originally appealed the sanction itself. US Soccer was reportedly approached by members of the Trump administration officials regarding the matter.

As the clock ticks down to kick-off, Balogun’s availability remains a focal point, with Belgium’s appeal casting a shadow of uncertainty over a highly anticipated World Cup encounter.
