Cristiano Ronaldo is not ready to be pushed quietly towards the exit.

The Portugal captain has again found himself at the centre of a familiar debate: how long he can remain a starter for his country, and whether the team should now turn more decisively towards Gonçalo Ramos.

The discussion has grown louder before Portugal’s World Cup knockout match against Spain, with Ronaldo now 41 and Ramos pushing for more responsibility in attack.

According to A Bola, Ronaldo responded sharply when asked whether he was approaching what could be his final World Cup appearance.

“You are very eager for me not to come anymore,” he said.

Ronaldo refuses to step aside

Ronaldo has never hidden that he wants to control the final chapter of his Portugal career.

The forward has spent more than two decades with the national team, winning Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles, while becoming the country’s most important football figure.

But the question of his role is now unavoidable.

According to A Bola, Ronaldo said before the tournament that the 2026 World Cup would be his last.

“Of course,” he said when asked if this would be his final World Cup. “I will already be 41.”

Still, that does not mean he sees himself as finished.

In the same comments, Ronaldo said: “I want to continue because I feel good, my body is in good shape and the performances on the pitch speak for themselves. In the national team I score goals, I help the team and I want to win trophies.”

That remains the heart of his argument.

For Ronaldo, the decision is not about age alone. It is about whether he still feels useful.

Ramos debate grows louder

The debate has been sharpened by the presence of Gonçalo Ramos.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker offers Portugal a different type of centre-forward, and his performances have made the selection question more complicated for Roberto Martínez.

According to A Bola, Ramos said after starting in Ronaldo’s absence against Armenia: “Everyone who is here can help and I am one more. Everyone would like to have more playing time.”

That was not an attack on Ronaldo.

But it did underline the reality inside the squad. Portugal have options, and the younger players are waiting for their chance.

Martínez was also asked whether Ronaldo and Ramos could start together. According to A Bola, the Portugal coach replied that playing both from the start “would be a weak point in our game.”

That makes the choice sharper.

If Portugal play with one central striker, the captain’s status alone may not settle the argument forever.

“Nobody is indisputable”

Ronaldo has previously accepted that no player should be treated as untouchable.

According to A Bola, he said during Portugal’s qualification campaign: “Nobody is indisputable in the national team.”

He continued: “I am one of them. I try to give something back when I start. Not only through goals, but in everything.”

That line is important because it shows a more measured side to Ronaldo’s position.

He knows he is no longer only judged by history. He is judged by what he can still give Portugal now.

At the same time, he clearly rejects the idea that others should decide the timing of his farewell for him.

Still central, even without starting

Ronaldo has also made clear that his importance to Portugal is not limited to whether he starts every match.

According to A Bola, he said: “Whether I play or not, I will always have an important role in the national team.”

That may become the balance Portugal need to strike.

Ronaldo remains a symbol, a scorer and a dressing-room reference. Ramos represents the future and offers a different rhythm in attack. Martínez must now manage both the sporting decision and the emotional weight attached to it.

Portugal’s match against Spain will only intensify that debate.

If Ronaldo scores, the questions may quieten for a while. If he struggles, they will return immediately.

One final World Cup push

Ronaldo’s Portugal story is now in its final World Cup chapter, but he is not treating it like a farewell tour.

He still talks like a player chasing one more trophy, not one simply waiting for applause.

The tension around him is therefore easy to understand.

Portugal have a squad good enough to go deep. They also have a captain whose legacy is untouchable, but whose role is still being tested by time, tactics and competition from within.

Ronaldo has heard the questions.

His answer, once again, is that he is not ready to disappear.
