Marsch says bench heard the break

Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné has suffered a serious injury that left teammates and staff visibly shaken, with head coach Jesse Marsch saying the incident was so severe that those on the bench could hear the bone break.

The injury occurred directly in front of the Canadian bench during a recent match. Marsch, quoted by TV 2, compared the moment to a previous training-ground injury suffered by Tajon Buchanan.

“It happened right in front of the bench, and we could all hear it,” Marsch said. “It was like when Tajon Buchanan was injured in training, and we could all hear the bone break. Our thoughts are with him, and everyone is shaken.”

Midfielder awaits surgery in hospital

Koné was taken to hospital after the match and is now preparing for surgery, Marsch confirmed.

“He is in hospital, where he is preparing for an operation,” the Canada coach said. “I will go and see him after the press conference, but his family is with him.”

The immediate concern for Canada is Koné’s condition and the operation ahead. While no recovery timeline has been confirmed, the nature of the injury suggests the 21-year-old midfielder could face a significant spell away from the pitch.

Canada turns focus to recovery

Koné’s absence would be a major blow for the national team, but Marsch made clear that the player’s health is the only priority for now.

The squad is expected to rally around the midfielder as he begins his recovery. For Canada, the incident has overshadowed the sporting outcome of the match and served as a stark reminder of the physical risks players face at the highest level.
