Primoz Roglic will leave the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe cycling team at the conclusion of the current season, a move confirmed by team manager Ralph Denk. The decision, which sees the Slovenian superstar’s contract expire on December 31, is driven by the team’s strategic shift towards developing emerging talent.

Denk explicitly stated that the choice was based on “sports performance” and the team’s need for “spaces on a rotation system” as “a bunch of super talents coming up.” He also affirmed that Roglic, a “proper sportsman,” intends to continue his career, currently focusing his full attention on the Vuelta a España.

Roglic’s tenure with Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe

Roglic joined Red Bull (then Bora-Hansgrohe) in 2024, having been bought out of his contract with the then-Jumbo-Visma team. His departure from Jumbo-Visma came after he was reportedly “toppled” by Jonas Vingegaard as the main captain. His time with Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe began brightly, securing an overall victory in the Vuelta in his inaugural 2024 season.

However, subsequent seasons saw mixed results:

In 2025, he won the Volta a Catalunya but finished 8th in the Tour de France and had a “failed” Giro.

His 2026 season has so far yielded only a recent triumph at the Slovenian national time trial championships.

The news of Roglic’s impending exit had been previously reported by Daniel Benson, with Red Bull management first going on record about the departure during the Tour de France, according to dnlbenson.substack.com.

A new direction for the team

Ralph Denk expressed admiration for Roglic’s continued passion for the sport, telling Daniel Benson, “He’s a proper sportsman, and he wants to continue, so chapeau to him. He had a journey with us. I’m also clear that it ends on December 31. His full focus is on the Vuelta, and he wants to continue. That’s the proof of a real sportsman, and it looks like he’s in love with the sport still and that’s really nice.”

The team’s focus on nurturing younger talent is further underscored by the recent extension of Jai Hindley’s deal, believed to be a three-year contract. As for Roglic’s next destination, speculation suggests he is not expected to join NSN or Movistar, while the Bahrain team had previously indicated a lack of budget for such a high-profile signing.
