Thierry Henry leaves Antoine Griezmann speechless with emotional message after Atletico win

Atletico Madrid’s place in the Champions League semi-finals was confirmed after a tense night at the Metropolitano but the moment that lingered came after the final whistle.

Antoine Griezmann, speaking on CBS Sports, was caught off guard when Thierry Henry paused the interview to deliver a personal message.

“Antoine, I have something to tell you,” Henry said in French. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for French football, the national team, and simply for football. You’ve given me a lot.”

Griezmann smiled, momentarily lost for words, as the exchange shifted the focus away from the match itself.

On the pitch, Atletico had been forced to recover after seeing their first-leg advantage disappear quickly. Holding a 2-0 lead coming into the night, they conceded twice inside the opening 24 minutes.

Lamine Yamal struck early to give Barcelona momentum, before Ferran Torres added a second to level the tie on aggregate and silence the home crowd.

Atletico’s response came before halftime. Ademola Lookman, signed in January, finished a move that restored their overall lead a goal that ultimately sent Diego Simeone’s side through.

Simeone later reflected on Griezmann’s importance, suggesting his influence will be better understood with time.

“We'll realise over time that we've had a football genius here a player who makes the difference, with experience and personality,” he told reporters. “Let’s hope God and destiny give him what he's looking for in his time left with us.”

Griezmann, who is set to join MLS side Orlando City next season, has played a central role in Atletico’s recent campaigns and remains one of the defining figures of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning team.

After the match, he stayed on the pitch long after most had left, applauding supporters and taking in the atmosphere.

“I hope I can help my team-mates to do something beautiful this season, something historic,” he said. “Our fans deserve it.

“After the match, I stayed on the pitch with them for several minutes, just enjoying the songs and the atmosphere, which was fantastic. Let’s keep going.”

Atletico now turn to the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad in Seville on April 18 another chance, perhaps, to give Griezmann the kind of ending his manager hinted at.
