Mercedes are no longer looking for disruption.
After a period of uncertainty, a high-profile driver change and repeated links with Max Verstappen, Toto Wolff has made it clear that the team’s future is built around George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
The message from the Mercedes team principal is simple: the line-up works, and he sees no reason to change it.
Mercedes back their current pair
According to Formula 1’s official website, Wolff was asked by Sky Sports F1 whether Russell was locked in at Mercedes for 2027 and whether Verstappen was now off the radar.

“Yeah, we don’t want to change things,” Wolff said.
“We’ve said it also to George, and I think it’s a line-up that is good for us. I’m very happy with the two of them.”
It is a clear public show of confidence in Russell and Antonelli at a time when the driver market has again been shaped by speculation around Verstappen’s long-term future.
Mercedes had previously acknowledged interest in the Red Bull driver, with Wolff saying there are some conversations “you just need to have”. But the focus has now shifted firmly back to the drivers already inside the team.

A new era after Hamilton
Mercedes were forced into a major change when Lewis Hamilton left for Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season.
The team chose Antonelli, then still a teenager, as Russell’s new team-mate. It was a bold move, but one that underlined Mercedes’ willingness to plan beyond the short term.
Russell has since said that he has a multi-year deal and will remain with the team next year. With Formula 1 entering a new rules cycle in 2026, Mercedes appear to value stability more than another headline-making driver change.
Russell, now 28, gives the team experience and continuity. Antonelli, 19, offers the speed and potential Mercedes believe can shape its next chapter.

Wolff praises Russell’s response
Wolff also spoke warmly about Russell’s ability to handle pressure, especially with a fast young team-mate alongside him.
“When you go into F1, you are resilient, and you have to believe in yourself,” Wolff said.
“I think George is particularly good at that.”
He added: “All throughout his career there have been ebbs and flows, and when someone appears to be very quick, but he has always been able to find himself and win.”

For Wolff, that resilience is central to Russell’s value. Antonelli may be quick, but Russell has already shown he can absorb pressure and respond.
“I have no doubt that that’s going to continue. Kimi is clearly very fast, that’s why we hired him, and George the same,” Wolff said.
Verstappen links fade for now
The comments came during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, where Russell had taken pole position and Antonelli qualified fourth after a disrupted Q3 session involving Verstappen.
For Mercedes, the timing made Wolff’s message even stronger. The team had two drivers performing at a high level, and its principal used the moment to make clear that he is not looking elsewhere.

That does not mean Formula 1’s driver market will stop talking about Verstappen. A driver of his calibre will always attract attention.
But from Mercedes’ side, the public position is now clear. Russell and Antonelli are not placeholders. They are the plan.
