Atletico Madrid are actively pursuing two prominent midfield targets, Joao Gomes of Wolves and Ederson from Atalanta, as the Spanish club looks to significantly bolster its central ranks ahead of the summer transfer window. However, their ambitions face considerable competition, particularly from Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal for the services of Ederson.
Atletico open talks for Wolves’ Joao Gomes
The Madrid club has initiated talks with Wolves via intermediaries regarding a move for Joao Gomes, according to GiveMeSport. The 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder is expected to depart Molineux this summer, largely due to Wolves’ anticipated relegation to the Championship. Wolves sources reportedly view Atletico Madrid as a serious suitor for Gomes, who is valued around £40 million.
Gomes has been a consistent performer for Wolves, making 35 appearances this season. Atletico’s interest in the midfielder dates back to January, though only informal outreach took place at that time. With the need for a new central midfielder a priority, Atletico are now stepping up their efforts to secure his signature, despite reported Premier League interest also circling.
Ederson pursuit complicated by valuation and Premier League rivals
While talks for Gomes are ongoing, Atletico Madrid have already made progress on another front, having reportedly agreed personal terms with Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder, Ederson. However, a significant hurdle remains in the form of a club-to-club agreement with Atalanta, who are demanding close to €50 million for the player. Atletico, meanwhile, value Ederson in the region of €30 million to €40 million and are currently unwilling to meet Atalanta’s asking price for a player whose contract runs until the summer of 2027.

The situation is further complicated by strong Premier League interest, with Manchester United and Arsenal identified as Ederson’s most concrete English suitors. Manchester United have already engaged in discussions with Ederson’s representatives and are planning to make two midfield signings this summer. While United had considered Gomes in January, other targets are currently understood to be higher on their list, including:
- Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest)
- Carlos Baleba (Brighton)
- Alex Scott (Bournemouth)
- Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)
- Aurélien Tchouameni (Real Madrid)
Notably, Manchester City are reportedly optimistic and advancing in talks for Elliot Anderson, a player also on United’s radar. Arsenal, too, are keen to add further depth in the centre of the park this summer. Their sporting director, Andrea Berta, is said to know Ederson well. Arsenal’s transfer priorities also include a starting left-winger and a right-back.
Atalanta are reportedly confident that their €50 million valuation for Ederson is attainable, citing the high volume of interest in the player and his relatively modest wage demands as key factors.
