The English Championship play-offs are set to ignite, with Millwall, Southampton, Middlesbrough and Hull City competing for the final place in next season’s Premier League. Promotion is estimated to be worth more than £100 million, with Coventry City and Ipswich Town already securing automatic spots.
As the semi-finals begin on Friday — Millwall facing Hull and Southampton taking on Middlesbrough — historical trends offer insight into who might have the edge in what BBC Sport has described as the “richest game in football.”
League position and historical success
Data highlighted by BBC Sport shows that since the Championship era commenced in the 2004-05 season, the team finishing third in the regular season has historically been the most successful, securing promotion nine times. This bodes well for Millwall, who claimed third place this season. However, recent trends suggest a shift, with four of the past six play-off winners having finished fourth, a statistic that favors Southampton.
- 3rd place (Millwall): Most frequent winner historically (9 times).
- 4th place (Southampton): Four of the past six winners.
- 5th place (Middlesbrough): Aston Villa (2018-19) was the most recent winner from this position.
- 6th place (Hull City): Blackpool (2009-10) was the last winner from this position.
Attacking and defensive prowess
When it comes to goal-scoring, history shows that the team with the best attacking record in the regular season wins promotion almost 50% of the time, accounting for 10 victories since 2004-05. Southampton enters the play-offs with the strongest attack among the four contenders this season. Intriguingly, each of the past five play-off winners had either the best or worst attacking record. Millwall, with 64 goals, holds the unfortunate distinction of being the lowest scorers among the play-off quartet, a trait that has also led to two past play-off wins.

Defensively, seven of 21 play-off winners had the best defensive record, while six had the second-best. Five of the past six winners boasted either the best or second-best defensive statistics. This season, Middlesbrough leads the way with 47 goals conceded, closely followed by Millwall with 49, suggesting both teams align with strong historical defensive trends.
Home advantage, away form, and recent momentum
While home advantage is often touted, only a third of Championship play-off campaigns have been won by the team with the best regular season home record. Southampton comfortably holds this distinction among the current contenders. However, six winners, including three of the past four, actually had the weakest home record – a statistic that could offer a glimmer of hope for Hull City, who finished with the weakest home form this season.
Away form appears more crucial: nine of 21 play-off winners finished the regular season with the best away record, including four of the past six. Millwall stands out here, possessing the best away record not just among the play-off teams, but across the entire division. Middlesbrough, with the second-best away record among the contenders, also aligns with a trend seen in two of the past six winners.
Momentum heading into the play-offs can be a double-edged sword. Eight winners accumulated the most points in their final 10 regular season rounds, including two of the past four. Southampton is the most in-form side this year. Yet, six play-off winners, including both of the past two and three of the previous six, had the worst end-of-season form, a pattern that surprisingly favors Middlesbrough, who picked up the fewest points in their final 10 games.

Play-off pedigree
Experience can be a factor. Millwall is making their Championship play-off debut. Middlesbrough has featured three times previously without success. Southampton, however, was in the play-offs two seasons ago, famously beating Leeds United in the final. Hull City boasts an impressive perfect record, winning promotion in both of their previous Championship play-off appearances, making them one of only two sides in history (alongside West Ham) to maintain a 100% success rate.
Based on these intricate statistical patterns, Southampton appears to align with a multitude of past winner trends, including their fourth-place finish, attacking threat, home record, end-of-season form, and recent play-off triumph. Millwall’s historic league position, formidable away record, and defensive strength also make a compelling case. Middlesbrough’s defensive solidity and Hull City’s perfect play-off history ensure that this year’s battle for Premier League promotion remains as unpredictable and thrilling as ever.
