In a scenario that would have been unimaginable just weeks ago, Tottenham Hotspur fans find themselves staring down a weekend of profound emotional conflict. With their club embroiled in a desperate Premier League relegation battle, many Spurs supporters are contemplating the unthinkable: cheering on bitter North London rivals Arsenal.
The unusual predicament stems from a critical confluence of fixtures. Tottenham currently sit 17th in the Premier League with 37 points, just one point ahead of 18th-placed West Ham United, who occupy the final relegation spot. This Sunday at 16:30 BST, Arsenal, the league leaders, will host West Ham in a London derby. A West Ham loss would provide a significant boost to Spurs’ survival hopes, potentially creating a four-point cushion for Tottenham if they secure a victory in their own fixture, according to BBC Sport.
A precarious position in the Premier League
Tottenham’s own crucial match sees them host Leeds United on Monday at 20:00 BST. Should both Arsenal and Spurs emerge victorious from their respective encounters, West Ham would find themselves four points adrift of safety with only two games remaining in their season. The stakes are undeniably high, with the threat of Championship football looming large for the Lilywhites.
The situation is further complicated by Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title. BBC Sport reports that if Manchester City overcome Brentford on Saturday, an Arsenal win against West Ham would leave the Gunners needing a maximum of five points from their final two games to clinch the championship.

Emotional gymnastics for the faithful
For Spurs fans, the thought of actively supporting Arsenal is a bitter pill to swallow, given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs. “One of my Spurs mates said they would be cheering on Arsenal. I was like: ‘What are you even saying!'” remarked Tottenham fan Ali Speechly, speaking to Women of the Lane, as quoted by BBC Sport.
However, the gravity of the relegation threat appears to be overriding traditional loyalties for some. Bardi from The Extra Inch Spurs podcast explained the difficult choice facing supporters: “Right now, survival has to come first. This is our priority. Safety is more important than banter, but you won’t see me crying if they draw 5-5 with Jarrod Bowen scoring twice in added time.”
Speechly also described the unusual dilemma as “emotional gymnastics”, with supporters torn between rivalry and survival hopes. According to BBC Sport, many fans had already accepted relegation as inevitable before recent optimism under Roberto De Zerbi reignited belief that Spurs could avoid the drop.
Tottenham’s recent form has done little to calm nerves. The club has made two managerial changes since their last Premier League home win, and since beating Brentford 2-0 on December 6, Spurs have collected just three points from a possible 27 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Their remaining fixtures after Leeds include an away trip to Chelsea on May 17 and a final-day home clash against Everton on May 24, ensuring a tense end to the campaign.
