Jay-Jay Okocha’s answer to football’s oldest modern argument came with a twist. Rather than weigh Messi’s trophies against Ronaldo’s, the former Super Eagles captain reframed what Ronaldo actually is: a pure goalscorer, sharing that category with Erling Haaland.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, hosted by John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy, Okocha picked Messi without hesitation.
“Messi, Messi.”
He then turned to the case for Ronaldo.

“Ronaldo is a special player, but he is for me a goal scorer.”
The Haaland comparison landed immediately.
“He can score 10 million goals. He is a goal scorer. It’s like (Erling) Haaland. Haaland is a goal scorer.”
Messi ‘on another planet’
For Okocha, Messi belongs in a different conversation altogether. His case leaned on the description that has followed the Argentine through his career, as reported by World Soccer Talk: that he does things on a pitch other players cannot.

“But Messi, Messi is on another planet. Messi is an art,” Okocha said.
“Messi was born to play football. He’ll get ill if he doesn’t play football. He’s a genius.”
Okocha, whose own dribbling made him one of the most-watched African players of his generation, was careful not to place himself above every peer. He named Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho as a player who ranked above him on pure talent, saying he had “the privilege to play with him, to really see his talent and appreciate it.”
The Haaland comparison is what gives the verdict its edge. Ronaldo has usually been debated against Messi on numbers, from Ballons d’Or to club and international records. Placing him alongside a forward 15 years his junior reframes the terms: relentless scoring is a specific talent, and Ronaldo shares it with the current generation’s most prolific finisher. Messi’s artistry, in Okocha’s telling, is a category of one.
