Graham Barber’s verdict lands squarely on Rice, not on the officials. Speaking after reviewing the flashpoint from the Amex, the former Premier League official said referee Darren England got the call right in stoppage time and pointed instead at the player for inviting a decision that could have ended his afternoon.

“Declan Rice’s incident wasn’t as bad as that, right? Because he actually never really kicked him. He actually just followed through with his knee, and so I think yellow card was the right decision for me,” Barber told GiveMeSport, drawing a direct comparison with Bruno Fernandes’ yellow the previous week.

“I would say to you, why put yourself in that position where you’re asking the referee to make a decision? It’s just a ridiculous thing to do for a professional footballer.”

The 97th-minute flashpoint

The incident came six minutes into stoppage time with the game long gone. Rice was driving with the ball when the Brighton teenager Yalcouye clipped him from behind. Rice turned and kicked out, catching the Brighton midfielder, who went to ground as home supporters called for a red.

England blew for the foul and reached for yellow. VAR official Timothy Wood reviewed the challenge and did not recommend an upgrade, with the Premier League judging Rice’s action petulant rather than violent conduct.

Barber’s Fernandes reference matters. He argued the Manchester United midfielder’s booking a week earlier was for a more definite kick, while Rice’s contact was closer to a follow-through with the knee. On that reading, yellow was consistent, not lenient.

Shearer: ‘The referee got that right’

Alan Shearer reached the same conclusion on Match of the Day.

“This was frustration from Declan Rice. Yalcouye gives him a little nudge there and I do think the referee gets that right,” the former England striker said on the BBC.

“He gives him the yellow card, I don’t think it was too aggressive; he didn’t lash out at him. Therefore, I think the referee got that right.”

Rice’s flare-up came in a match Arsenal had already lost by three. Pascal Gross opened the scoring on 31 minutes, Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, and Chema Andres headed in from a corner on 57 to finish the champions off, according to the ESPN match centre.

It was Arsenal’s first league defeat of their title defence, and the manner of it, an early collapse at the Amex against Fabian Hurzeler’s side, has done more damage to Mikel Arteta’s start than any refereeing decision. The Rice moment reads now as a symptom, a senior player losing his patience in a game already out of reach, rather than the turning point.
